Do you have a blocked drain? If yes, then we have some simple tips for clearing blocked drains.

Sometimes, you might find that you have blocked drains and the plumber cannot get to your residence as quickly as you would like…and you need to shut down your water.

Here are some tips to see if you can clear your blocked drain.

clearing blocked drains

Buy a good quality plunger
A plunger should be the first thing that you use to help with clearing blocked drains. Plungers are typically economical and very easy to use.  If you have a blocked drain, or think it is getting a bit slow in draining away – you could use the plunger to clear anything that may be there, which may prevent a major blockage.

Use a drainpipe cleaning remedy
If after using the plunger, the drain still seems to be blocked, you could try a drain cleaner – again, available at your local supermarket.

Keep in mind the type of drainpipe that you are going to put this in and make sure that the product you are purchasing has actually been approved to use with this drainpipe system. Also make sure you read and follow the instructions carefully.

In spite of the ease of using a cleansing solution, you should not depend on them frequently as they can damage your water drainage system particularly if you consistently use them.

You also need to make sure any left over product is kept where children cannot access it.

Plus make sure you let the plumber know you have used this product.

Vinegar and baking soda for clearing blocked drains
An excellent natural alternative to using chemical based cleansing solutions are vinegar and baking soda. Pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain and follow this with half a cup of vinegar and boiling water. Sodium bicarbonate and vinegar will react with each other once poured down the drain successfully removing the blockage without triggering any kind of damage to your pipes.

Also, you don’t have to worry about any chemical smells which is often the instance when you make use of chemical based cleaning solutions.

Using a salt water mix
A salt water mix can also be effective in protecting against blocked pipes. To do this, pour the salt water mix down the drain daily, especially after washing the dishes. It helps get rid of odors, grime and grease from accumulating.

So there are a few tips to help clear blocked drains. We hope they helped, however, if you find none of these work or you have more than one pipe blocked, you may need to call your local plumber for help.
